Report on the 14th UK & Ireland Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Society annual meeting, June 2021
The 14th UK & Ireland Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Society annual meeting was held virtually on the 3-4 June 2021, hosted by the Centre Health and Sustainability of the University of Leicester. The theme of the meeting was ‘Research in a Pandemic’ and covered both COVID-19 and non-pandemic occupational and environmental epidemiological research relevant to UK & Ireland through keynote speakers, and a mix of short and longer presentations.
The meeting featured two keynotes, the first delivered by Professor Paul Wilkinson who discussed air Pollution and asthma and the second by Professor Martie Van Tongeren on the work-related risk of COVID-19. Over 100 attendees attended the online meeting to hear over 20 speakers discuss a wide range of topics such as the risks of public transport during the pandemic, climate change and health inequality in the UK and risk factors for COVID-19 absence in healthcare staff. The meeting included an online social event, giving participants the opportunity for informal discussion in various virtual social rooms including and ‘New hobbies during the pandemic’ and ‘Books in the pandemic’.
